What Good Are The Boy Scouts of America?

October 21, 2007

Most everyone has heard of the Boy Scouts of America. At one time they were well respected and looked upon as a good organization, preparing boys to be men, teaching patriotism, discipline, love of God and country and such.

When I was a Boy Scout we learned many skills. Camping, fire building, cooking, swimming, first aid and even basic survival, to an extent. We were taught to be TRUSTWORTHY, LOYAL, HELPFUL, FRIENDLY, COURTEOUS, KIND, OBEDIENT, CHEERFUL, THRIFTY, BRAVE, CLEAN and REVERENT. We lived by the Scout Motto, Be Prepared. We were taught respect of our Flag as well as proper Flag Etiquette.

Many of those skills helped me make it through my time in Viet Nam and gave me a foundation for life that has seen me through many down turns, encouraging me to just pick myself back up and keep going.

You might even call the Boy Scouts of America the original Green Group, as our common practice when camping was the leave the land cleaner than we found it. We were taught to respect nature and not to litter.

Sadly, for quite a few years now, the organization has become the target of leftists who see it as a danger to their leftist ideology and it must be ridiculed, infiltrated and eventually destroyed. Anything that teaches a deep reverence to God and to America spells trouble to the Socialist leaning left.

To disrupt and eventually destroy the organization, somewhere along the line they became a target of the leftist ACLU because they did not accept Gays as Scouts or Adult Scout Leaders. For years, the battle has been ongoing to either disband the organization or force them to accept Gays, against the wishes of the Scouts and their parents.

It isn’t like these young men will be denied any information on Gay lifestyle as we all know that Public Schools cram it down our kids throats every chance they get.

Taken before the Supreme Court of the United States, the left leaning Court even agreed that they do have a right to ban Gays, as they also do Atheists and Agnostics, under their “constitutional right of freedom of association and free speech under the First Amendment.” By a 5-4 vote in June of 2000, the Court overturned a lower court ruling and upheld the Scouts right to determine by their moral code, who can and cannot belong.

Of course that didn’t set well with leftist, even though other lower courts for years upheld their right to select who they felt was best to be leading impressionable young boys. So the attacks continued.

Look to San Diego’s Balboa Park. 16 acres leased to the Boy Scouts for $1 a year and that they maintained, rebuilt and by fundraising and volunteer work, had a state-of-the-art swimming pool and 600-seat outdoor amphitheater built. The Boy Scouts have faithfully maintained the grounds and the park has been available to all citizens, not just the Boy Scouts.

We can thank the ACLU now for stepping in and protecting citizens from this Organization as they sued on behalf of a Lesbian couple and an Agnostic couple. U.S. District Judge Napoleon Jones Jr. ruled the Boy Scouts as a religion and therefore their lease of the park was unconstitutional under the Separation of Church and State canard. City Councilwoman Toni Atkins, herself a lesbian, commented, "Now it's up to the Boy Scouts to respond and stop discriminating."

In the meantime, the park must be maintained by the city at millions of dollars of expense, where the Boy Scouts were doing it free.

It doesn’t stop there.

For as long as I can recall, the Scouts hold a national Jamboree every four years, with federal support from the Department of Defense in the form of “non-religious supplies and services.” They have been supportive in this manner for 60 years. Yet, in 1999 the ACLU filed suit again over “Separation of Church and State.” They lost that one.

Undeterred, leftist still assault the Boy Scouts every chance they can get. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, an openly Gay Activist City Solicitor has raised the Scouts rent for their offices in a landmark Philadelphia building by a whopping $199,999! To return to their long held $1 a year rent, all they need do is allow Gays to be adult leaders of young boys and members.

After the loud outcry these past few years over Gay Priests abusing young boys for decades, one would think the Boy Scouts would receive recognition for protecting youthful members. As can be seen above, such is not the case as Gay Activists and the ACLU has decided this organization must either accept Gays, or die.

Since their inception in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America have prepared many famous men for adulthood and even public service. While they have produced American Heroes, Industrial Giants, Athletes, Veterans and Politicians, a few have slipped through without learning the honor our country seems to be lacking today.

One such would be Senator and Presidential candidate, Barack Obama. A former classmate claimed that he and Obama were in the Boy Scouts together while in school in Indonesia. Although not the Boy Scouts of America, International Scouting teaches much the same thing in values, respect and honor.

Obama has come out refusing to wear an American Flag Lapel Pin. More recently he was spotted at a barbecue for Tom Harkin standing during the playing of our National Anthem.

He sure didn’t pick up such disrespect from the Boy Scouts of America.

Our country is in a slide downward as the values and respect we were taught as youth’s is under fire and being discarded left and right. Conservative values are scoffed at and ridiculed, even though America was founded on them and stood strong for decades by them. The Boy Scouts of America have been teaching young boys for nearly a century,

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
And to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
Mentally awake, and morally straight.

We need the Boy Scouts, leave them alone!

Nice post, Lew...I didn't know about Balboa Park and what kind of an idiot is this judge ruling the scouts as a religion?

Bound determined to put a stop to a valuable asset for young boys and men--after all the griping about the priests, now they want to turn the pedophiles loose among BSA--unbelievable.

Good job, Lew. I didn't know about Balboa Park either, but I have heard about the Scouts being banned from military bases. Ironic, a government agency, the military, that doesn't permit homosexuals having to ban a private organization because it doesn't either.

'Bout Barry Hussein O, I'm convinced he's a Muslim. He was so educated then supposedly left the religion to become a Christian. Where's the fatwah?

Lew Waters said...

Thanks.

As I understand it, Liberty, the Senate passed the Support our Scouts Act of 2005 (S. 642) by 98 to 0, over ruling that ridiculous out of court settlement banning the Scouts from Military Bases.

Too many of us have been complacent too long and allowed groups like the ACLU to slowly chip away at the foundation of America. I am relived to see so many waking up and pushing back against these anti-American groups, including the far left Democrats.

Great post! Here are some thoughts I have gathered over the past months concerning the BSA....

“Religious organization” - HMM - But which religion? From first hand experience in a camp, Boy Scouts need very generic non-sectarian blessings or graces at meals - As I recall, more than 4 dozen faiths - from Catholic to Jewish, Islam to Hindu, Unitarian to Buddhist, as well as some I cannot pronounce, offer awards to youth through Scouting - not Scouting awards - but awards presented by those faiths….

“Culture wars”…. When did Scouting EVER state, imply, or otherwise suggest that Scouting welcomed gay leaders? DALE? Was he a BOY or an ADULT when he took the court case? Seems to me that he was an ADULT.

“Culture wars” Part 2 - In more than 30 years as a volunteer I have NEVER had a mother say “I do not want my son in your Cub Pack or Scout Troop because you do NOT have a gay leader” - - - In fact I have had many parents say “the day you bring in the gay leaders is the day we take our sons OUT”

Participation in Scouting is down from the 60-70% of boys in the 1950s-1960s to probably 20-25% now. There have been a few other changes in society since then, too. More Little League, more fall baseball, more soccer, more karate & martial arts, more band, more, more, more - the very issue that has been in the news so much lately - parents are “over-programming” the lives of their “hyper-achiever” children. Add to that the plethora of video games, computer games, and other legal (and otherwise) diversions. I suggest that these are more “to blame” for the decrease in youth in Scouting than the decades old belief in a supreme being and decades old “no gay leaders” stance. The Girl Scouts USA have seen similar declines (their Annual Reports are available online), yet GS USA embraces homosexuality and atheism – does that not indicate the issue of declining numbers is NOT the result of the BOY Scouts membership policies?

Volunteerism & community involvement of adults, families and individual youth as a whole has dropped dramatically throughout the country. You cannot blame the incredible drop in volunteerism that has caused Kiwanis Clubs, Lions Clubs, volunteer fire departments and rescue squads - as well as in Scouting - on the BSA.
Scouting is NOT for every boy - and that has NOTHING to do with belief in a supreme being nor with Scouting not allowing gay leaders.

Actually the decreases are more likely attributed SCHOOL BOARDS refusing families of Scout aged boys the opportunity to learn about Scouting by banning Scouting - AND the oft expressed concern of parents (that I have spoken with) that the gays will prevail in courts, etc and then the gays gain access to these parents' children. Again - no parent I have seen is interested in seeking out a gay leader for their child.

Lew Waters said...

K, thanks for that. As you point out, many things are dragging society down. Scouting banning Gay Leaders isn't one of them.

Still, our society is hurting with the decreased participation in Scouting. I agree it isn't for everyone, but over all, our society is losing the most by it.

You hate, I hate, we all hate.

What was the most important commandment? Love God.
What was the next most important commandment? Love your neighbor.

So what does hating the neighbor whom God loves do?

I've always thought of myself as very conservative. I've thought of the ACLU as evil, or absurd at best. I was a scout myself and I have a son who is a scout. I think the comments here, however, are missing the point.

Yes, the boy scouts has a right as a private organization to come up with their own membership requirements. They are not being told to do that. Let's leave the gay thing aside for a second and consider atheists. The boy scouts accept all sorts of believers - even those from religions, including those who believe that some of the other accepted religions are the product of the Devil's teaching. They do not, however, accept those who are not believers, or seekers who may be agnostic at the time.

Imagine what you would think if you found out that there was a group using public land and discounted rates. This group may teach many good things, but all members must sign a sheet saying that Christ did not rise from the dead. Would this be acceptable? Would you want your government to give special treatment to this group? Would you want to "just let them be"?

I suspect Christians would like to see the special treatment stop. Why would we expect non-believers to act any differently?

Lew Waters said...

Anonymous, I don’t know of what hate you mean. Boy Scouts are not taught to hate nor do I hate. Pointing out injustice to a group that builds boys into men who will beter our country isn’t hate.

Tomas, your point eludes me. Just what “special treatment” do the Boy Scouts of America receive that only they are entitled to?

What is being done to the Boy Scouts is ridiculous.

How is they are “using public land [at] discounted rates” when it is they who reclaimed and maintained the public land, at no cost to the local government, and made the land accessible to all? As a former Boy Scout yourself, surely you recall the “leave the land better than you found it” teaching?

In case you’ve missed it, several groups are receiving special treatment while the Boy Scouts, who traditionally teach pro-America values and instill pride in our nation in young men, are being vilified.

Like I said, your point eludes me.

tomas s said...

If you want to know what kind of special treatment or special access is involved, others have written about it more elloquently than I can. A google search on Atheist Scouts should turn up some good hits. I do think that renting public land at below market rates does count.

Two examples, perhaps minor, spring to mind.

BSA claims an exclusive charter on the "scout" concept in the US. If you want to start your own scouting group, BSA will attempt to stop you.

Scouts often recruit at public school open houses or even at in-school assembleys. They distribute literature and recruite during school hours at my son's school. Would you like it if the Aquarian Tabernacle did that? The ATC teaches good values, but would you want them to have access to your kid's school to the exclusion of other groups?

Lew Waters said...

What is it with people that come in here complaining about something, but want me to research for them as to why? Is it so difficult to supply information as to why you are against something?

Can't anybody think for themselves any more?

It would seem that even if there is a lock on the use of the name "scouts," plenty of other youth groups exist by other names.

So, am I supposed to think that forcing the Scouts to "bend their rules" for atheists isn't just a step towards forcing them to accept gay scout leaders, giving them access to young boys?

You are entitled to think what you wish about them using public lands, even at below market value. I notice too that you ignored that they often are the ones who maintain and restore those lands, at no cost to the public, while the public retains full access as well. I wonder how much would be owed the Boy Scouts for all the work and maintenance they did on Balboa Park? Perhaps it is they who should be billing the county instead?

The problem with agenda's like yours is you often bite yourself in the butt without realizing it.

Just because a group like ATC comes by the schools doesn't mean my kids would have to buy into their nonsense, any more than yours would have to join the Scouts. That is where parenting comes in instead of expecting the schools to be solely responsible for your kids.

Incidentally, my kids are in their thirties and neither was in the Scouts. They went for BlueBirds instead with no problem.

We could just as easily turn that around. I figure that if you're interested in what some people consider "special treatment", you can look it up. If you are not interested, it would be a waste of my time to spell it out.

So, am I supposed to think that forcing the Scouts to "bend their rules" for atheists isn't just a step towards forcing them to accept gay scout leaders, giving them access to young boys?

Nobody said anything about forcing BSA to do anything - especially not me. You are making assumptions about my position. This reinforces my decision to ask you to think for yourself.

I notice too that you ignoredSNIP

Maybe you could see it that way. The fact is, though, that this matter has been discussed by so many. I've made my comment already. I'm not interested in a debate. If you want a debate, go find one which has already been done. It saves times and goodwill all around.

The problem with agenda's like yours is you often bite yourself in the butt without realizing it.

I didn't realise I had an agenda. I just asked people to try to see it from the other side.

Just because a group like ATC comes by the schools doesn't mean my kids would have to buy into their nonsense, any more than yours would have to join the Scouts.

Forgive me, but I have a hard time accepting that Christians would sit quietly by while "satanists" passed out flyers at open house.

That is where parenting comes in instead of expecting the schools to be solely responsible for your kids.

You really are good at making assumptions about others. This nails it for me. Feel free to take the last dig.

Not very much in the comprehension department, are you, Tomas? If you note on the front page of my blog, it is my “opinions and views” I express here. If you take exception to them, that is your right, but you should back up what you claim and not demand I look it up for you. My views and opinions are openly expressed with links back to articles or information referencing the whys. You really should try it.

Nobody said anything about forcing BSA to do anything - especially not me.

Oh? You just came to disagree for no reason? How Liberal of you.

I've made my comment already. I'm not interested in a debate.

Uh, you come here, disagree and return twice and not interested in a debate? But, you want me to look at the other side, but again, don’t adequately express the other side? I’ll bite, what are you on? Perhaps, what are selling?

I just asked people to try to see it from the other side.

Fair enough, but it might work better if you expressed and backed up this “other side.”

Forgive me, but I have a hard time accepting that Christians would sit quietly by while "satanists" passed out flyers at open house.

Since you have not sinned against me (that I know of), so no need for forgiveness. But, a true Christian must walk amongst lions. We do not dictate what others do. That is radical Islam.

This nails it for me. Feel free to take the last dig.

Again, you entered here to counter my views. I accept that. But, if the fact I don’t fall over you and readily accept your words, words that you don’t even back up, all I can say is don’t the door hit you where the good Lord split you. Consider me arrogant, but on my blog, I always take the last word, if I so choose. But I do appreciate you granting me permission.

Feel free to express your view, if you decide to, but please, do back it up with something.

The Boy Scouts is a fine organization with lofty, noble goals. I will always work to protect and preserve the Boy Scout movement.

Lew Waters said...

Good for you, Mikey. America needs people like you and the Boy Scouts.

I do not regret one minute of the time I spent in the Scouts. What I learned in Troop 127 in South Florida has helped me many times, both in the US Army and afterwards.

Oh, I'm gonna have to say the ignorance here is hilarious. Yes, yes, Obama must be a socialist. He was the main candidate for the socialist party. Oh wait, never mind. He was a democrat, which stands for democracy. Republicans stand for a republic. It's not a hard concept. You use the term liberal in a bad way, when in fact, a liberal is someone who stands for freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, an individual's right to private property, free markets, and a transparent system of government.
How devious! Those bastards! Who would ever follow that movement!

But about the boy scouts. I'm a boy scout, and I've gotta say that the boy scouts needs to be even -more- selective about who is a boy scout. Too many fat children in there when we are required to be "physically fit" as our scout oath declares we are to be. Too many kids who find violence funny, which is no mentally sound. It's a private organization, they can take in who they please. You don't see many court cases complaining that African Americans can't join the KKK. I understand one stands for good, the other for bad, but the fact is, good or bad, private organizations have a choice of who to include.

Lew Waters said...

What a brave soul you are posting anonymously.

Yes, Obama is a Socialist. Or, to be more exact, a Marxist. He espouses Marxist theory and ideals.

Your Democrat Party hardly stands for Democracy. But, since you obviously don't know, America was never set up as a "Democracy." It is a Representative Republic.

Funny thing about liberals standing for "freedom of thought and the rest of your rhetoric." You, the liberal, show no tolerance for MY freedom of thought in your comment, do you?

Freedom of speech? Hrdly when liberals go out of their way to shout down opposing speech.

Limitations on powers of government? It's hard for to tell if you are just plain stupid or a complete idiot with that one. Who is trying to nationalize everything under government? It isn't conservatives.

Free markets? Again, who is currently tryingto nationalize everything?

Transparent system of government? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way. In case you don't know, and your ignorance glows here, bright eyes, when other members of today's government, both Dmeocrat and Republican, were off fighting World War Two, one of the most prominent Democrat Senators, Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, was organizing Ku Klux Klan Rallies and enlisting members for hte Klan as the Grand Kleagle.

You also must have slept during history in school as the Klan has traditionally been comprised of predominantly Southrn DEMOCRATS!!!!!

It was Democrats who primarily fought and filibustered Civil Rights bills in the 1960's.

But, the funnist portion of your hilarious tirade is you saying, "fact is, good or bad, private organizations have a choice of who to include."

Since you feel tha tway and believe in those "FREEDOMS" you list, why the hell make your comment at all?

Ordinarily I delete moronic comments as yours, but the public deserves to see the ignorance spewed by the left today.

I became an Eagle Scout in 1970. Scouting was incredibly valuable for me as it has been for many like me as I was growing up. I can't thank the Scoutmaster I had then enough and the overall Scouting organization. My Scoutmaster was an ex WWII fighter pilot who taught us to be men, not whiners and to have integrity and good character. We did very long brutal hikes in the Sierras for weeks and got thrown into character testing situations.

I am always amazed at those who lash out at this incredible organization. First, I realize it this demonstrates a disease symptom of these people -- a need to feel better about themselves and more powerful by destroying something considered widely very good. If they didn't have the Boy Scouts as a target for their inner anger and hate they would lash out at some other group or thing. It is somewhat the gang mentality which gains their social status thru violence and being social outcasts.

The Boy Scout organization would not be the same without a spiritual element. I cannot spend a lot of time here on that but to destroy the spiritual context would be to destroy the fundamental tenets of Scouting, that one be well integrated with all facets that make us up.

This assault on the Boy Scouts is shameful and if it is not simply an evil agenda it is at least brought on by people who have serious psychological problems. Regardless, I hope for the Scouts to become increasingly strong especially now when society needs organizations that will help and educate quality young men.

Bob
Eagle Scout, '70

Lew Waters said...

Well said, Bob. Thanks for adding your thoughts.

And of course, you are 100% correct. The Boy Scouts and even the Girl Scouts, have endeared many people with a spirit of can do and prepared us for life.

I can think of no finer organization to prepare young people to face life as adults.
